1. Modernizing Legacy Systems: Replacing critical subsystems
Organizations with large and complex IT systems are regularly required to modernize the applications and subsystems that support the organization’s on-going operations. In order to enhance or modernize enterprise-class systems that have hundreds or thousands of different components, a thorough understanding of the specific components and the relationships between the components is mandatory.
In the case of Progeni's State Agency customer, they had to replace an aging message control system at the core of their operations (that processed and routed thousands of messages daily to different internal and external systems) with a modern, XML-based message switching subsystem that also incorporated important, new functionality. Furthermore, the new message switching subsystem had to run on a new hardware platform and software stack but still had to communicate with the other subsystems (as well the databases and other applications).
The Agency used Progeni’s 4Sight product to accurately and completely determine all of the touch points that had to be taken into account as part of the upgrade of the message switching subsystem. With this information in hand the programming staff was able to make sure that the new message switching subsystem was retrofitted to the specifications and the upgrade to the new message switching subsystem was successful. 4Sight enabled use
of the information from 4Sight to avoid any potential problems with the upgrade. In this case, analysis
tasks were reduced by approximately fifty percent, which kept the project on time and greatly reduced the
resources allocated for rework that was anticipated given the number and complexity of the changes.
